Sam Smith’s objects are often difficult to define. Over time they became bigger, more elaborate and less toy-like, reflecting life’s experiences, memories and colourful characters. They became more sculpture-like. His artworks are always witty and often astringent comments on society; they have been described as sculpture toys for grown-ups. By the 1970s they had become quite large, with unusual themes that explored the darker side of humanity.
