Although known primarily for his wooden sculptures Sam Smith produced many works on paper. He had early aspirations to be a painter, worked professionally as a graphic artist, and created various studies for sculptures. His keen observational wit and desire to capture characters and develop rich stories around his favourite themes runs throughout. Over time his interests gradually developed towards more nuanced and often darker, challenging subjects.
